Exclusive: Xperia L tastes unofficial AOSP based Android Lollipop (Alpha Build); How to install

It hasn't been even a week since the Android Lollipop sources were uploaded and since Nexus devices started receiving the official Lollipop update. And Xperia L users can already taste some Lollipop sweetness. The Lollipop ROM, developed by known XDA senior developer Varun Chitre, isn't yet a cnadidate for being your daily driver, but come on, it is still in Alpha stage.

Let's take a look at what's working in the Lollipop build and what's not:

What's working in the Lollipop build for Xperia L:

  • Display and touch
  • Audio and hardware media playback
  • Cameras (both front and back)
  • Vibration
  • All the sensors
  • Internal and external storage
  • Headset
  • GPU rendering and Hardware acceleration
  • Notification LEDs

And what's not:

  • Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, and RIL (All modem operations)
So unless you want to use your phone as a media player, you might want to skip over it now. Or be a bit brave, test it out for a while and provide the developer some feedback in this xda thread.

How to install Lollipop on Xperia L

  • Set up ADB and Fastboot on your PC.
  • Power off your Xperia L. Connect your powered off device to PC using USB and while doing so, press and hold the volume up button till the notification LED glows blue.
  • Download the rom file (locate the latest version here) and extract it in the ADB folder in your PC.
  • While pressing shift key, right click anywhere in the adb folder and select "Open command window here" option.
  • In the command prompt window that appears, give the following command:
    fastboot flash boot boot.img
    fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
    fastboot flash system system.img
