How to root Galaxy S Duos 2 S7582 (and install clockworkmod recovery permanently)

About 18 months ago, we published a how to root guide for the Samsung Galaxy S Duos S6562. The guide was a huge hit and is among the most read guides ever on Droidiser. So, it makes sense to do a similar guide for its successor - Galaxy S Duos 2 S7582. Samsung launched the sequel to S Duos after it sold well (when they came to their senses and priced it below 10k). The S Duos 2 features a better dual core processor in response to the woes of S Duos. Along with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, this results in smoother performance than its predecessor.

Check out the full specifications of Galaxy S Duos 2 on, you guessed it, GSMArena. If you are in India, find the best pricing options for this phone here.

Why one would like to root their Galaxy S Duos 2 becomes imminent when you go through this list of things that you can do on your Android phone once you root it. So, once you've decided to root your phone, proceed through this guide carefully.

Disclaimer: Rooting your phone will void your manufacturer warranty. Though in most cases, unrooting can reinstate warranty, most Samsung handsets now come with a Flash counter. Rooting your phone requires flashing recovery partition thus bumping the flash counter up, which will let Samsung know that you have lost your warranty. An app called TriangleAway by Chainfire does reset this flash counter back to zero, I'm not sure of its compatibility with S Duos 2. Summarizing all this, proceed only if you understand the gravity of what you are about to do with your smartphone.

I somehow ended up writing 4 tiny guides, so I named them from A to D.
  1. Installing Clockworkmod Recovery
  2. Rooting Galaxy S Duos 2
  3. Installing Clockworkmod Recovery permanently
  4. Getting Stock recovery back
If you simply want to root your Galaxy S Duos 2, you will have to follow guides A and B in the order they are given (you can't root without flashing clockworkmod example). If you are an advanced user and would like clockworkmod recovery to permanently replace your stock recovery, follow guides A, B and C (unless you are already rooted. If so, only follow C). If you want to get back to stock recovery, just follow guide D.

A: How to install Clockworkmod Recovery on Galaxy S Duos 2 S7582

  1. Download and install Samsung USB Drivers and install them on your Windows PC. It is a direct executable file, so installing the drivers shouldn't be a rocket science.
  2. Download and extract Droidiser Galaxy S Duos 2 Rooting Kit.zip anywhere on your PC.
  3. Connect your phone to the PC as a Media Device. The option to do so will appear when you connect your phone using a USB cable.
  4. Now, copy the supersu_1.34.zip to your phone memory. Copy the zip file as it is, as it will later be flashed. In simpler words, don't extract it.
  5. Power off your Galaxy S Duos 2 S7582. Now, press and hold Home + Volume Down + Power button till your phone's display turns up.
  6. At this point, you should see a warning screen, press the Volume Up key to ignore the warning and to proceed ahead.
  7. While your phone is in the Download Mode (that's the official name of the boot mode your phone is presently in), connect it to your PC and drivers will be automatically installed.
  8. Inside the Droidiser Rooting Kit, you will find a file named Odin307.zip. Extract it anywhere on your PC.
  9. Inside the extracted folder, run the Odin3 v3.07.exe file. This should launch the Odin window.
  10. If your phone had been connected correctly and the driver installation was successful, you should have seen a blue box in the ID:COM section. If this isn't the case, double check your
  11. Now switch to the Odin window and under Option, tick F. Reset Time and Auto Reboot. Leave all other options at their default state.
  12. Tick on the checkbox next to PDA and then click the PDA button. Doing so will open a popup window asking you the location of the file you want to flash. Select the recovery.tar.md5 file which is, again, present in the Droidiser Rooting Kit.
  13. Before proceeding to the next step, remove the back cover of your phone so that the battery is easily accessible.
  14. Read the next few steps in advance before performing this one, so that you have an idea of what you're required to do. Press the Start button near the bottom edge of the Odin window. A PASS message should appear indicating that the phone was flashed successfully.
Odin should look like this before you press Start. Besides, the ID:COM box should be glowing indicating that a phone has been connected.
  15. As soon as the PASS message appears, your phone will start a reboot. Hold the phone in your hand. A vibration will signify that the phone's shut down has been completed and that it will now initiate the restart. Just as the vibration occurs, pull out the battery from the panel as if it is the most precious element on Earth.
  16. Unplug your phone now.
  17. Don't power on your phone just yet, perform the rooting guide given below first, otherwise all this flashing thing we have done will go waste.

B: How to root Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 S7582

  • The real intimidating part (if any) in rooting your phone was flashing the clockworkmod recovery. It is smooth sailing ahead, so chill a bit.
  • Once chilled (:P), press and hold Volume Up + Power + Home buttons simultaneously till your Galaxy S Duos 2 boots into the recovery mode.
  • In recovery, using Volume Up and Down buttons to scroll and Power button to select, select Install zip from sd card > Choose zip from Internal sd card and then select the supersu_1.34.zip file you copied in step 1 of installing clockworkmod recovery.
  • Confirm your selection by selecting the only Yes option that appears among the hordes of No.
  • Once the supersu file is flashed, reboot your phone (using the reboot option present in recovery) and find a new app called SuperSU in your app drawer. Go ahead, test if you've rooted successfully and install some root only apps!

C: How to install Clockworkmod Recovery permanently on Galaxy S Duos 2 S7582

If you've been wondering why we asked you to act like a ninja and pull out the battery as soon as the vibration occurred, that was because if and when the phone reboots normally, Samsung's stock recovery replaces the clockworkmod recovery you just flashed, rendering everything you did useless. Once you have rooted and thus reboot your phone after that, your stock recovery will again replace clockworkmod recovery unless  you flash it again using Odin and play the pull-the-battery-in-the-nick-of-a-second game every time you want to use clockworkmod recovery.

So, you can either do that or install clockworkmod recovery permanently. To install it permanently, using any file explorer that is capable to handle root permissions, go to the /etc folder on your phone and rename the file named install-recovery.sh to something like install-recovery.sh.bak

Once you've renamed the file, you'll have to repeat the flashing procedure one last time (i.e. step 1-17 of the guide A on this page). This time around, you can let the phone reboot once you flashed it as you no longer have to worry about the stock recovery replacing the one you flash every single time your phone reboots.

D: How to install Stock Recovery back on Galaxy S Duos 2 S7582

Just in case you are fed up of the clockworkmod recovery (or the fact that the clockworkmod recovery presently available for Galaxy S Duos 2 isn't fully functional), you might want to get back to stock recovery. If that is the case, extract this 7z file (using 7zip) and then flash the recovery.tar.md5 file you extract from here instead of the one you use in step 12 of guide A.

Do let us know if you face any troubles while following this tutorial on your Galaxy S Duos 2. We shall try to help as much as humanly possible. Thanks for dropping by!
