[Exclusive] How to update Xiaomi Mi3 to the latest MiUi v6 beta version

So MiUi recently got bumped to version 6 and, expectedly, the beta version of the rom is out for Xiaomi Mi3, ahead of its release for the non-Xiaomi Android smartphones. In order to get the MiUi v6 on the Xiaomi Mi3, you need to be a beta tester over at Xiaomi, but fortunately, we have been able to found a way around that.

Just follow this guide and you would be in for some visual treat (given you like MiUi's user interface). Obviously, we can let Xiaomi worry about any copyright infringement cases it might have to handle, or to tackle all the notoriety that MiUi has gained over time, for its visual similarity to the iOS. Let's proceed to the guide.

Update the Xiaomi Mi3 to MiUi v6 beta

  1. Download this miui_MI3W_V6.zip file (353 MB approximately).
  2. You won't need to extract this. Just transfer this zip file as it is to your Xiaomi Mi3 storage.
  3. Now go to the Updater app on your phone (or alternatively, go to Settings > About Phone > System updates). Once there, tap the menu button and select the select installation package option.
  4. Locate the zip file that you downloaded and transferred to your phone and the updation process should begin. Once it's completed, your phone should reboot.
  5. If you had previously rooted your Xiaomi Mi3, updating to MiUi v6 might revoke your superuser access. In that case, you can root your Xiaomi Mi3 again.
  6. (Optional - only if your phone now asks for some weird username password combination) Though this zip file is reportedly working fine without any requirement of username and password (as the rom was meant for registered beta testers), if you face any such problem, without turning on your mobile data, install and open root explorer, and edit the build.prop file present in /system/ folder to change the 1 at the end of the line ro.miui.secure=1 to 0, so that it now reads ro.miui.secure=0. Once you've done that, reboot your phone.
Apart from the first step, which can be slow for people still stuck with slow internet connections (like me), this guide should not take more than 5 minutes to get through it. Let us know if you face any problems in the update.
