Moto G India receives OTA Android 4.4 KitKat update; How to update yours

At one point of time, it was reported that Moto G will be launched with KitKat onboard when it will be made available in India. While those plans certainly didn't see the light of the day, Motorola has released over-the-air Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Indian version of Moto G, after nine days of the launch of the phone.

What's new in KitKat update for Moto G

  • All usual KitKat features Immersive mode hides navigation and status bar in full screen apps and games
    • Memory optimizations for faster multitasking
    • Hangouts with integrated SMS
    • Cloud printing
    • Restyled status and navigation bar
    • Full screen album art on lock screen
  • Improved Camera, thanks to bug fixes and manual control of exposure and focus
  • Beautiful Gallery app
This update comes about a week after we had seen Moto G's dual SIM version getting the KitKat update in Malaysia. For our impatient readers, we had already shared an how to guide to help them get the update even before it was released officially. If you are among those who decided to wait for the official procedure to come through, we shall help you do it in the official way too.

How to update Moto G India to official Android 4.4 KitKat

  • Requirements:
    • Charge your phone to at least 60%
    • Make sure you have a stable enough data connection (if using mobile data). Wi-Fi should be preferred, if available.
  • When your Moto G is connected to internet, go to Settings > About Phone.
  • Once in the About Phone screen, tap the System Updates option. It will check for available updates and come up with something like this.
  • Press the Download button to start downloading the update.
  • Once the download is complete, your Moto G will automatically reboot into an installation screen (recovery is the correct term). You don't need to anything at this point, except being patient.
  • The installation process takes about 5-10 minutes to complete and drains about 30 percentage points of your battery (that's why we asked you to charge it to 60% as a precaution).
Once the update completes, go to Settings > About Phone to check if your phone has actually updated to KitKat.
