How to update Yu Yureka to official CM12 Lollipop manually

After missing its deadlines umpteen number of times, Cyanogenmod has finally released the official CM12 Lollipop update for the Yu Yureka. Yureka users have been crying hoarse for this update since the phone was first launched, and the update is finally here. While the update will be rolled out to all the Yureka owners within three days, according to Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma, you might want to flash the Lollipop update manually on your device for a couple of reasons – either you are too impatient to wait for the OTA update to reach your Yureka, or you don’t want to spend 650 odd MB data from your 3G plan. Whatever be the case, we are here to help you get your Cyanogenmod 12 Lollipop update on Yu Yureka.

Important: The process isn’t a very difficult one, especially if you haven’t rooted your phone and flashed a custom recovery. If you had, install the stock recovery again (using Flashify app, or fastboot mode). Also, if you were on some third party rom, you would want to be back on stock CM11 rom.
Note: If you don’t know what we are talking about in the above paragraph, you can just proceed with the guide below, you won’t need to do any of the things that we mentioned above,

Before you proceed:

  • Updating to Lollipop doesn’t wipe your data. Still, you should back up all your important data, just in case.
  • This is an official update. Installing this, even manually using the method we are providing, doesn’t void your manufacturer warranty in any way.
  • Make sure that your phone isn’t low on battery. Anything above 35% should be good enough to go ahead with. (Any guide on the internet that asks you to charge your phone above 80% before following a guide, is simply taking unrequired precaution.)

Update Yu Yureka to Official CM12 Lollipop

If you rather watch than read, then this video guide is for you.

  1. Download the CM12 Update file for Yu Yureka (official link).
  2. Transfer this zip file as it is (don’t extract it) to the internal storage of your Yureka.
  3. Once you’ve done so, reboot your Yureka in recovery mode. To do that, do either of the following steps:
    • Go to Settings > About phone and tap on the Build Number field seven times. This would unlock Developer Options. Now go to Settings > Developer Options and tick the Advanced Reboot option. Now long press the power button, and then select the reboot option to get the reboot to recovery option. Select it to boot into the recovery option.
    • Otherwise, power off your Yureka. Once it shuts down completely, press and hold the Volume Up, Volume Down and Power buttons together till the phone boots up into the recovery mode.
  4. When you enter the recovery mode, select the Apply update option, then the Choose from internal storage option, then the 0/ option, and finally select the cm-12.0-YNG1TAS0W0-tomato-signed.zip file that you copied to your phone in step 2.

  5. Once you select the file in the last step, the recovery will start flashing the update. When the flashing completes, you will be back on the main screen in the Recovery mode.
  6. Select the Reboot system now option and wait for the reboot process to complete. In my case, it took about 15 minutes, though the number of apps you had installed on your phone previously is also a deciding factor for the same.

Is your Yureka lagging after the Lollipo update? Here's the fix:

If your phone is lagging unbearably after installing the update, boot into the recovery mode again. Now select the Wipe cache partition option in there, and let the process complete (it might take about 5 minutes). Reboot your phone now and it should be running fine now.

Conclusion

That’s all that you needed to do in order to update your phone. Wasn’t that difficult, was it? Let us know what you think about the sweet Lollipop update that you just flashed on your Yu Yureka. Just to break the ice, here are my initial impressions of the update:
  1. If KitKat was running buttery smooth on Yu Yureka, I need to find a smoother material to compare Yureka with Lollipop. With all the slick animations and transitions, the phone feels even faster. A reason behind this might be the fact that Lollipop is the first Android version that can utilize the 64-bitness of a smartphone processor.
  2. Benchmark scores seem to have jumped up by about 10 percent. Previously, I used to get around 30,000, while I reached 33,333 after updating to Lollipop. Also, the Project Anatomy on Antutu, that checks the GPU power of the phone, runs much smoother now, than before. This might be an indication that heavy games will now run better, than they previously did, on our Yu Yureka.
  3. Many little things that collectively provide a better user experience. Adaptive brightness, that is an amalgamation of manual and automatic brightness control. Battery stats have improved drastically. You can add multiple users on your device, like you've been doing all these years on a Windows PC. You can now theme apps individually, using CM12's App Themer feature, so that when you apply themes, no apps go berserk.
Though the phone did get hot during the updation process, I haven’t faced any heating problems in the couple hours of normal usage that I have had till now on Lollipop.

Don’t forget to share this guide with your friends, who might happen to be desperately waiting for the OTA update to reach them.
